Interested in being a Caregiver
OVERVIEW
We believe that everyone, regardless of disability, can live in the
community. This means designing programs to meet individual needs, not
fitting people into pre-existing programs.
For many, a community based staffed resource is the way to go. For
others, especially individuals whose needs involve consistency, minimizing
changes or individuals that want to work towards more independence, family
care is a perfect option.
The program involves matching up individuals with full time caregivers.
They live in the caregiver’s home in their own bedroom or a suite in the
home. They share space, meals, household duties and live together as a
roommate or family member would.
The people that provide care come in all shapes and sizes. They are
singles, couples or families. As with all our work, we welcome diversity.
They are experienced, committed people that want to share their lives with
someone with a disability.
Caregivers undergo an intensive screening process, that includes a
criminal record search and detailed home study with questions about
lifestyle, personal supports, values and family dynamics.
Family care is an organic, uncontrived residential option for individuals
looking for an alternative to staffed resources.
Are you interested in family care as a
residential option?
How does Spectrum match people with caregivers?
We put great care into selecting potential caregivers who have relevant
training and life experience necessary for a commitment to being family
caregivers. We will introduce you to potential caregivers who can meet your
particular needs. You and your family will have the final choice over this
important decision.
Can I stay in my existing day program?
We encourage people to maintain any outside programs of their choosing,
assuming the necessary arrangements can be made (eg. funding,
transportation).
What support does Spectrum offer if there are problems?
Our expectation is that you and your caregiver will resolve day-to-day
issues as they arise, just as any roommates do. Caregivers are selected
based on their ability to communicate clearly and effectively. If problems
come up that you can’t resolve on your own, then we can offer assistance.
What happens if the caregiver decides to quit or move?
Caregivers are required to give ample notice if they plan to move, so we
have time to start looking for a new caregiver or a different model of
service.
Will my own family and friends still be able to help me with
decision-making?
We welcome the involvement of families and friends to assist you with
decision-making. Your caregiver’s role is to support you and to enhance your
natural support network, not replace it.

What are the expectations of me as a family care provider?
We are looking for people who have experience working with individuals
with disabilities. People who share our vision of inclusion. Compatibility
is imperative as we are looking for people whose lifestyles and interests
fuse with those of the person they support.
What about respite?
We encourage individuals to take care of themselves so that they can
provide the best care possible to the people that they support. This
involves time away with spouse or friends. Included in
each contract is a respite amount to enable people to get away when needed.
What kind of support can I expect from Spectrum?
Spectrum’s family care coordinator is responsible for regular
monitoring of the home and to provide support to the caregiver. We
will be holding quarterly meetings with all our caregivers to encourage
networking and provide opportunities to share resources.
How am I paid?
Each contract is different based on the individual needs of the supported
person. It is paid monthly as a lump sum on the 15th of the month.
Family care contracts are tax free.
