Spectrum’s Strategic Planning Update

In September 2020, Spectrum launched its latest round of strategic planning.  To help lead the planning process, we brought in an external consultant.   Marsha D’Angelo of Apostrophe is a strategic planner, communications consultant and Appreciative Inquiry facilitator who has worked with organizations like Delta Community Living Society, Inclusion BC and Nanaimo Association for Community Living.

Over the past eight weeks, we’ve heard from 106 staff members and stakeholders in surveys, Zoom sessions, and phone conversations.  Self-Advocates, family members, employees, coordinators, leadership team members, the Board of Directors, representatives from Community Living British Columbia (CLBC) and various community partners have generously shared their time and insights.

During our stakeholder outreach efforts, we’ve learned a lot and we’ll be looking at ways to incorporate the findings most meaningfully into our strategic plan.  Key findings, to date, include:

  • 98% of Spectrum employees feel the work they do makes a positive difference in the lives of people with disabilities.
  • Spectrum is highly valued for its ability to listen to families and deliver individualized, adaptable care to persons served.
  • There are opportunities we can further explore in employment, housing and succession planning.
  • Diversity matters. We are learning about ways we can use our knowledge to help others in their understanding of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and how we can build meaningful relationships with Indigenous Peoples.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll present proposed goals to Spectrum’s Board of Directors and leadership teams, devise strategies and tactics, draft the plan and look at the best, most accessible ways to communicate its outcomes. Our hope is to achieve a strategic plan that is memorable, inspiring, actionable, and truly contributes towards more innovative, effective, and inclusive work for years to come.

The simple truth is that the best strategic plans are informed by a variety of honest perspectives.  We are, therefore, grateful to everyone who has contributed their time and experience to this latest round of strategic planning.   We are excited for the work ahead!
