With the temperatures now rising into the 30’s, it’s a good time to review some key things to do that will keep you safe and cool during extreme heat.
Here’s a short list of things you can do to stay safe during a heatwave:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities
- Stay out of the sun, especially between 11am – 3pm
- Respect fire bans and check trail and road closures before leaving home
- Identify somewhere you can cool down, such as community centers, libraries, shopping malls, parks and other shaded green spaces
- Follow your city/region’s social media to stay updated on heat, flood and fire warnings
- Use awnings, shutters, blinds or window coverings to keep your home cool
- Identify those close to you who are at risk and support them
- Keep pets indoors or in cool, shaded areas during midday hours
