 Community Living Services are:

...a range of supports provided to people with disabilities, enabling them to live as full citizens in the community:

Residential Services - places for people to live as independently as possible, with assistance provided by staff or live-in caregivers as required.

Day Programs - support for people to be engaged in their community in meaningful ways, including paid or volunteer work, continuing education , and recreation.

Supported Family Care - an alternative to staffed residential services.  People are matched with caregivers (families, couples or singles) who want to share their homes and their lives with someone with a disability.

Health and Wellbeing in Persons with Developmental Disabilities
Date(s):Thursday, September 25, 2008 8:00 AM - Friday, September 26, 2008 5:00 PM
Location:The Coast Plaza Hotel and Suites, 1763 Comox Street, Vancouver, BC
Description:Children, youth and adults with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder experience high rates of both health and mental health concerns. These impact significantly on quality of life of the individual concerned as well as their families, caregivers and the community. British Columbia has closed its institutions for individuals with Developmental Disabilities, but the struggle to develop quality specialized services where appropriate, as well as ensuring access to generic health services continues. This conference will provide education and informative updates on psychiatric, behavioural and complex health components specific to individuals with DD, and showcase best practices in the field. The conference will address topics such as Epilepsy; Aging in Down Syndrome; Prader Willi Syndrome; Autism Spectrum Disorders; Sexual Health; Self Injurious Behaviour (SIB) and other challenging behaviours as well as ‘co-morbid health conditions’ such as dysphagia, pain and mobility issues.
