Do you believe that people with disabilities enrich our community?

Are you interested in supporting all people to be valued, heard and have their choices respected?

A career at Spectrum Society for Community Living could be for you.

Spectrum supports people with disabilities to lead their own lives. They create teams made up of people who need assistance and their one-on-one community support workers.

Spectrum’s focus is on being a bridge for people with disabilities to live fully in their neighbourhoods and community, not in institutions and programs.

Spectrum is looking to expand our team. Our ideal team members are flexible and able to share leadership with the people they support, including their families and friends.

People who work at Spectrum have a wide range of abilities and a variety of passions. The people we support chose their community support worker based on their common interests, such as visual arts, cooking, sports, or music.

Community support workers motivate, encourage and engage the interests of the people they support.

“It starts with a client and it starts with a community support staff, and we work together to form a foundation that is healthy for all of us,” explains Deepi, a person supported by Spectrum.

Ernie Baatz, Spectrum’s Executive Director, explains the most important quality for a Spectrum team member:

“They care about people, they want to get to know people well and want to help those people develop a good life.”

“One of the benefits of supporting one person at a time is that staff learn to understand what people want in life and to respect their wishes,” he continues.

What is unique about Spectrum as a community service agency is that they do not offer group programs. Instead, staff work with people one-on-one, which means that every work experience looks different, as the job is tailored for the individual who is supported by Spectrum.

Spectrum supports the people who work with us by offering competitive wages, an Employee Assistance Program for all permanent employees. for all permanent employees working over 20 hours a month, we offer a Group Benefit package for and participation in the municipal pension plan.

In addition, we are committed to lifelong learning and advancement opportunities for everybody. Spectrum also hosts regular social events to bring everyone together; people we support, their families, friends and our teams.

“Every day is a new experience and I’m learning every day,” says Angelica, a Spectrum community support worker. “This is my passion. This is a big experience for me, professional and personal.”

“Staff stay because they’ve found a home at Spectrum.  They’ve found an organization where they can be themselves and be creative. And share their interests. It becomes more than a job. It’s mutually rewarding to both people,” adds Susan Stanfield, Director Community Living Services.

Deepi sums up her experience working with Spectrum staff, “There’s no I or me or myself.  It’s about a team.”

If you are looking for a meaningful career working alongside people with disabilities, we could have just what you’re looking for.

We celebrate and embrace diversity as an integral part of our organization, which extends to Spectrum employees. As an equal opportunity employer, we strive to be an inclusive, equitable and accessible environment for both our employees and supported individuals alike, ensuring everyone feels valued and respected.
