ABOUT THE BOOK – “TOTALLY AMAZING: FREE TO BE ME”
Teresa Pocock’s unique worldview is expressed through her art. The way she sees the world, the people she meets, and her feelings about life are all told through her art, poetry and music.
Teresa’s exhibition at Gallery Gachet showcases her art, poetry and examples of her self-advocacy as a person with Down syndrome.
From writing to government officials for an apology on her wrongful placement in an Ontario nursing home in 2013 – to asserting her rights to more of what she loves in life, like more mayonnaise and the freedom to be herself in Vancouver, B.C.
Teresa won a DTES Small Arts grant to create and produce the book. The Vancouver Foundation created the Downtown Eastside Small Arts Grants Program, in partnership with the Carnegie Community Centre, to give DTES artists “the opportunity to advance their careers by supporting and showcasing their work”.
Teresa’s Totally Amazing book will be available for purchase and also available on Amazon.
The Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival (VOAF) offers visual and performing artists facing social exclusion and other barriers opportunities for exhibition and sales, performance and participation, connection and learning.
The 3-day free festival takes place at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre from August 10-12, 2018, and includes individual artists as well as organizational partners, workshops for artists and the public, and hundreds of artworks on display and for sale, alongside live art and other performance forms.
AutismBC in partnership with 4-H British Columbia, will host autism advocate and best-selling author Temple Grandin for her acclaimed talk: Developing Individuals who have Different Minds. Temple Grandin was one of the first people to publicly share her insights into autism from an insider’s perspective and is a prominent author and speaker on autism, who has published multiple books on the subject.
Grandin also has a successful career consulting on both livestock handling equipment design and animal welfare. She is a professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University and has authored several books on animal behavior and working with animals. Temple’s success story was told in the 2010 film “Temple Grandin,” an award-winning HBO production starring Claire Danes.
AutismBC is British Columbia’s entry point and knowledge resource for all things autism. For over 40 years we have been empowering those on the spectrum and their advocates, with the information and pathways to education to help those affected achieve their fullest potential. Our commitment starts with early diagnosis and intervention, and extends the entire lifespan of British Columbians on the autism spectrum. For more information please visit www.autismbc.ca
