Rodney Graham

Spinning Chandelier

“Spinning Chandelier,” by Vancouver artist Rodney Graham is a kinetic sculpture that will transform the vast, cathedral-like spaces under the Granville Bridge.

November 17, 2019

Graham’s sculpture extends from his 2005 35-fi lm loop installation Torqued Chandelier Release in which a crystal chandelier whirls rapidly as its supporting cable is unwound. Installed under the bridge above the intersection of lower Granville with Beach Avenues, a monumental 14 by 21 foot faux glass recreation of the fi lm’s 18th century French chandelier will slowly rotate and rise over the course of twenty-four hours, then once a day release and dynamically spin back to its starting point. “Spinning Chandelier” will quickly become an urban icon, turning a dark under-bridge into the enjoyable focus of public celebration.

Anyone looking for some volunteer work.

If you would enjoy sourcing some art material, fabric samples, tiles and carpet samples for a lady in Ladner who has taken it upon herself to collect from stores and distribute these materials to schools and crafting circles, so that they can be recycled and not end up in the land fill, this may be something you would like to do. It’s a big job, and most of the stores she picks up the samples from are in Vancouver. She is looking for volunteers to pick up the material and possibly distribute it or even just have it in one place so that she can pick it up and keep it until people can come to get it.

Here is her contact information and she can give you more information if you know anyone who is interested 🙂
