WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OUR COMMUNITY
(EVENTS, NEWS, & AWARENESS)

Monthly Maker Meetup

Monthly Maker Meetup

This Maker Meetup is an opportunity to break the ice at MakerLabs, meet other beginners, tour the facilities, and receive support from MakerLabs staff.

This event is open to members and non-members of MakerLabs, and we encourage both new and old members to attend and meet others in the community.

If you’re just getting started in hobby making or starting your small business, meeting other creatives in a co-working setting can be intimidating. Who can you ask for help? Where are certain tools or amenities stored at MakerLabs? How do you begin to network and collaborate with others? What’s the best way to kickstart your maker career? We’re here to help smooth your transition into the culture!

If you’ve been working on something cool and want to share it, you can do a 5 minute show and tell. Maybe you’re looking for collaborators on a project, or if you’ve recently learned a new skill, come share it with others.

The Woodworking residency will also be presenting their finished projects, so come and get inspired by other beginners.

This will be a loosely structured event with no formal curriculum or teaching. Ask for advice on your concepts or project, introduce yourself, or simply hangout and chat.

Interdisciplinary participation is strongly encouraged, but absolutely no experience required.

Topics: woodworking, ceramics, woodturning, textiles, electronics, CNC machining, 3D printing, welding, metal fabrication.

WHEN: Tuesday, April 22nd | 7:00PM-8:30PM

WHERE: MakerLabs (780 East Cordova Street Vancouver, BC)

COST: Free! | Click here to register

Still Moon Arts – Gardeners’ Gathering

Still Moon Gardeners’ Gatherings at Colour-Me-Local Dye Garden

Are you interested in Natural Dye plants? Gardening? Community? Art?

At Still Moon’s Gardeners’ Gathering Work Parties, we’ll be weeding, watering, and maintaining the Colour Me Local Dye Garden. Participants will work together to tend the garden and will be able to discuss gardening tips and questions.

At some of these gatherings, we will bring a dye pot and fabric strips so we can experiment with natural dyeing while we work! At other sessions, you will be able to take home seedsor flowers to transplant into your own garden.

We have a special project this year: making the garden more water-efficient and drought-resistant. At many of our garden sessions, you will have the opportunity to create clay irrigation pots (Ollas). These pots will be buried in the garden beds, where they can be filled with water that will slowly be released into the soil’s root zone. We’ll also discuss tips for waterwise gardening.

Real Talk – Classic Pizza Party (All Genders & Orientations)

People with intellectual disabilities get together with Certified Sexual Health Educators to discuss dating, love, relationships, and sex. Come join Certified Sexual Health Educator John, Co-Facilitator Zainab, and Peer Facilitator Larissa on Wednesday, April 30th from 11am – 1pm for an in-person Real Talk Classic Pizza Party.

The event is free, and anyone with an intellectual disability is welcome to attend. If you want to bring a supporter or a friend with you – that’s totally fine! If you register in advance you will get an email reminder the day before the event. It’s also ok to just show up. Click here to find out more about how to prep for a Real Talk event, and feel free to email john@real-talk.org if you have any questions.

Everyone has questions about dating, love, relationships and sex.

Questions like:

  • How do I meet a boyfriend / girlfriend / partner?
  • How do I let my family know that I want to date?
  • How can I make sex safer?
  • What is consent?

It’s totally normal. But sometimes it can be hard to know where to get good information. At this event, we’ll watch some Real Talk videos, and have a conversation hosted by a Certified Sexual Health Educator. We’ll talk about where to get good information, who can support us with this stuff, and how to figure out confusing situations. People are welcome to talk about things, or to just listen if they don’t want to talk.

SHOWING: Secret Mall Apartment (Hearing Assistance)
Secret Mall Apartment in Vancouver at VIFF Centre

Did you ever wish you could live at the mall? In 2003, that’s just what Michael Townsend and several of his friends did, creating one of the most original guerilla art projects of the 21st century, building and furnishing a hidden 750 sq. foot apartment — complete with couch, cabinet, even a TV and PlayStation — inside the Providence Mall in Rhode Island. It remained undetected for four years. As a small cohort of artists who had been displaced due to the mall’s development, the initial act of living in the mall evolved from a practical joke to a personal act of reclaiming space from real estate moguls and developers.

Stitched together from camcorder footage from twenty years ago alongside interviews with the original participants -– many of whom are only revealing themselves now for the first time -– Secret Mall Apartment strikes a balancing act between the absurdity of its story and surprisingly profound questions about gentrification, the nature of social art, and what truly makes a home.

WHEN: Saturday, April 26th | 2:30PM

WHERE: VIFF Centre – Lochmaddy Studio Theatre (1181 Seymour St, Vancouver, BC)

Vancouver Community Fridge Project

[ID: a photo of an open fridge, inside is various fruits and vegetables.]

The Vancouver Community Fridge Project is a decentralized food distribution network and mutual aid initiative created to provide healthy, free food and essential supplies to our communities across lower mainland.

Our mission is to combat food insecurity by encouraging our communities to take part in laterally-directed mutual aid, starting with providing free, safe, non-policed, accessible and nutritious foods through community fridges and pantries.

Click Here to Find A Fridge!

All fridges and pantries that are apart of the VCFP network will be operating on a strict no policing, no-shame policy. This means, the VCFP does not condone patrolling how fridge users engage with the fridge, gatekeeping, or any exclusionary or harmful behaviours. The fridges should be accessible, welcoming places based on trust and communication of needs, established by and for the community.
