Our latest book was “All Shook Up” by Shelley Pearsall. Can you tell by these photos what the book was about?
Yes it involves Elvis! And each section of the book starts with words from an Elvis song.
The book is about a teenage boy, Josh, who unexpectedly has to live with his father. He discovers that his father is an Elvis impersonator! Josh is mortified. And to make matters worse his father is going to perform at his new school. Josh decides to take drastic action to stop his father singing at his high school. Along the way Josh makes new friends, goes to one of his father’s concerts and travels to Las Vegas – to guess what – the Elvis Wedding Chapel.
There is lots of humour in the story, people singing and dancing to Elvis songs, and the book as a happy ending. Over the past several weeks we have looked at books about Elvis, played Elvis trivia and sung Elvis songs.
We already know a lot about Elvis and knew the words to his most famous songs. The book talked a lot about the costumes Elvis wore, and Josh’s father also wore them in his shows. One of our members has been to Graceland; and another member’s mother has actually met the real Elvis! One member has a teddy that she got when she went to an Elvis impersonator show.
To celebrate finishing “All Shook Up” we got together and watched the Elvis move Blue Hawaii. We had fun singing along to the songs in the move and wished we could go to Hawaii.
