A Message From The Leadership Team
At DWP, we believe in celebrating every step forward on our journey to end disability poverty and we’re thrilled to share this significant milestone with our community today.
A heartfelt thank you to all of you – and to our partners in the healthcare sector and labour movement – for using your voices to ensure the disability community’s call to guarantee the benefit was heard by the Prime Minister’s Office and Members of the Treasury Board.
Thanks to our collective advocacy, the government announced that the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) regulations have been approved and will come into effect on May 15, 2025. This means individuals holding the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) certificate who have filed their 2024 income tax return can apply for the CDB starting in June, with payments beginning in July this year. Unfortunately, despite overwhelming feedback at the draft stage, the final regulations are nothing new.
We know that $200 per month is too little for too few, but it’s a crucial step in the right direction. With the election approaching, we still have much work ahead.
Through our monthly town halls, we’re identifying advocates riding by riding and building connections with allies to strengthen the voices and influence of people with disabilities. Engaging directly with candidates and sharing lived experiences of disability poverty is essential as we seek champions in the next Parliament who will advocate for a stronger, more inclusive CDB.
Let us continue to work together, amplifying our collective voice and driving positive change for the disability community. Your dedication, passion, and resilience make all the difference. Together, we can create a future where no one with a disability lives in poverty. Let’s keep pushing forward, one step at a time.
